August 15, 2002: the day I first set foot on Peruvian soil. I had nothing but a few numbers given to me by El Maestro Carlos Hayre and a burning desire to immerse myself in a music that completely enchanted me. Previously I had studied Costal Peruvian (Afro-Peruvian) music with Carlos in New York for only a few months, and when I asked where and how I could hear more, he simply said "go to Lima..." The next few years consisted of many trips to Peru (some of which lasted 2 months or more) in addition to continued studies with Carlos and numerous Penas. During this time I made many friends involved in Afro-Peruvian music both in Peru and New York. I also performed a great deal with traditional musicians as well as those fusing Afro-Peruvian rhythms with jazz concepts.
August 2007: like so many times before, I returned to Lima. It was finally time to pursue one of my dreams to record with some of my friends. Some from whom I have learned, others with whom I had shared some of my finest musical experiences in Peru...
Peru can be peculiar. It is a place where the concept of time loosely exists. Aside from its laid back almost mysterious concept of time, its not always easy to find someone, especially musicians. Perhaps they don't have the same phone number as before, they are on tour, or no one knows where they are. As a result, it can take days to contact someone. Luckily, not long after arriving, I was able to solidify plans to work with Maestro Carlos Hayre, Cotito, and Sergio.
Then, on August 15, 2007, exactly five years from my first visit, Peru was struck with a devastating earthquake of almost 8.0. Damage was minimal in Lima and I as well as everyone I know was unharmed. However, the people in the province of Ica were less fortunate. Cities such as Pisco, Chincha and El Carmen were leveled in some areas. For me, it wasn't merely a tragedy. The music I have come to love so much, and that has enriched my life tremendously has roots in the areas that suffered most. The entire purpose of my being in Peru was to record a production based on the rhythms that emanate from the culture and history of Ica. In the Spanish language "Replica* means literally "reply", but it is also the word for the series of smaller earthquakes that occur after a larger one (aftershocks.) In the days that followed, amidst "replicas" and the electric nervousness of a somber but restless country, I realized I had to go ahead with my plans. This production is my "Replica" or "Reply" to the many beautiful things Peru has given me.
Since my first trip to Lima, I've learned and experienced a great deal about the rhythms of Coastal Peru. I feel the nostalgia of being in Lima with friends on a Sunday afternoon, enjoying ceviche and a cuzqueria. I have performed with some amazing musicians, some of which have become very close friends. Among these people, the most important has been Carlos Hayre. Not only has Carlos unself-ishly shared his abundant knowledge, he has also become a dear friend and mentor. This production is dedicated to my friend El Maestro Carlos Hayre, and to Peru.
